The Company Before the Powersports

Going back to the beginning of Yamaha takes us to a period in which there were zero powersports vehicles being manufactured. In fact, powersports vehicles hadn’t even been invented yet. Yamaha was first founded in 1887 by Torakusu Yamaha in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, at which point they created musical instruments, mostly pianos and organs. The music side of Yamaha still exists quite successfully, but after World War II, they were looking to expand their products beyond music. 
 

Breaking Out Into Motors

To reach powersport vehicles, we need to jump all the way to 1955. Leading up to this year, the company was looking to diversify in the post-war economy, and Japan was in need of easier, affordable forms of personal transportation. At first, they focused only on creating small engines, which led to the establishment of the Yamaha Motor Company in the aforementioned year. While they started small, they quickly grew into something much, quickly expanding into making their own motorcycles.
 

Expanding Operations

After decades of success in their initial endeavors, Yamaha expanded into other powersports markets, taking them both to off-road riding and on-water adventures. The latter field became a particularly influential step forward. Since powersports for the water wasn’t a well-explored market, it was up to Yamaha to pave the way.
